‘How about’ and ‘What about’ can be used interchangeable in most situations. You can start a question with ‘How about’ to suggest an action or a possibility.

  1. How about we go for coffee?
  2. How about driving to the city?
  3. How about eating dessert?

You can use ‘What about’ interchangeably, to express an objection to or a problem.

  1. What about we go for coffee?
  2. What about driving to the city?
  3. What about being polite and respectful next time?
  4. What about being yourself instead of acting like someone else?
  5. What about being conscious of race and racism?
