It depends on the point of view and context of the sentence. To give you a simple example;

Lilly works at an office and her boss is asking for her. She missed her bus and now she is late. The boss would ask ‘Where is Lilly?’

Here are the following examples that you could use:

She missed her bus coming into work. Why is this? This is because she is late.

She isn’t in her office. That’s because she is late.

Can we start the meeting? No. Why not? It’s because she is late.

You can see how the same situation can result in many different answers but ultimately Lilly is late and the reason is because she missed the bus coming into work.
