Writer's Note

Say vs. Tell

"Say" and "tell" are both used to communicate information from one person to another. When using "say", you don't need to include whom the information was given by however, when using "tell" you must include "I/he/she/they/we".

*REMEMBER: "Say = said", "Tell = told"* Maintain the tense within the sentence.

Say/Said

1. She says that she doesn't like pizza.
वह कहती हैं कि उन्हें "pizza" पसंद नहीं है।
2. I always say, 'Better safe than sorry'.
मैं हमेशा कहता हूँ, 'Better safe than sorry'.
3. He said that he'd come to visit me in the summer.
वह said कि वह गर्मियों में मुझसे मिलने आएगा।
4. We said what we said, no regrets.
हमने जो कहा, वही कहा, कोई पछतावा नहीं।
5. He said something in Spanish and it sounded heavenly.
उसने Spanish में कुछ कहा और वह स्वर्गीय लगा।

Tell/Told

1. I came to tell you that he didn't make it. I'm so sorry.
मैं आपको यह बताने आया हूँ कि वह नहीं बच पाया। मुझे बहुत खेद है।
2. If you see him, tell him I say hello.
यदि आप उसे देखें, तो उससे कहिए कि मैंने नमस्ते कहा।
3. They told us to leave the property.
उन्होंने हमसे संपत्ति छोड़ने के लिए कहा।
4. He told them to come into work on their day off.
उसने उनसे उनकी छुट्टी के दिन काम पर आने के लिए कहा।
5. I haven't told you the good news! I just got a book deal!
मैंने आपको अभी तक खुशखबरी नहीं बताई! मुझे "book deal" मिला है!

BONUS - Use two in the same sentence! She says she can't tell you because it's a secret.

Therefore this is why we don't use "Did I tell you" NOT "Did I say you" and "Didn't I tell you" NOT "Didn't I say you".
