Writer’s Note:

This question may sound impolite but it depends on the circumstances at hand. Situation 1 occurs at a restaurant when a waitress in asking if she can clear your plates. The customers are still working on (eating) their meal and says he’s just finishing up. The second situation occurs at home with someone asking if they are done with their meal in order to wash the dishes.

In both situations, they are asking politely but when read, it might sound impolite or rude.
